Midcoast Court Outcomes, Week 2: 14 Dismissals, No Reasons Given

33 charges closed in Waldo and Knox courts Oct. 21-30. 14 were dismissed, none with a reason given. No names, every source linked.

Part of Crime in Our Communities: Informed and Involved, a weekly series.

This is the second weekly look at how cases actually end in Prosecutorial District 6: Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc and Waldo counties.

No names. Just the charge, the outcome and the source. Every original court report is linked, so you can check me.

This edition covers court reports published Oct. 26 to Nov. 2, 2026. It builds on When Prosecutors Don't Prosecute: Why Second Chances Still Need Follow-Through and last week's first edition (both on the Crime in Our Communities page).

Context

The office. District Attorney Natasha Irving has led District 6 since 2019 and is running unopposed for a third term tomorrow, Nov. 3 (Maine Files race page). She told The Lincoln County News her office has two assistant DAs, carries about 2,400 active cases and is "overwhelmed." She's campaigning on expanding restorative practices (Lincoln County News, Oct. 24).

So I read a decision not to prosecute as part of that restorative approach. That's the fair reading. The trouble is that the court lists never say so.

The trend: break-ins around Waldoboro. No arrests or court outcomes yet, so these are context, not cases:

  • Oct. 16: someone used a crowbar to get into a downtown Waldoboro cafe around 4:40 a.m. and took the cash register (Lincoln County News, Oct. 22).
  • Overnight Oct. 22-23: two rural stores, one in Cushing and one in Warren, were broken into. Knox County Sheriff Patrick Polky says they were planned. He says Waldoboro police are also investigating break-ins in their town and the two agencies are sharing notes. He also cautions the cases might be unrelated, and he doesn't call it a "rash" or a "spree." A stolen pickup was recovered with Waldoboro PD's help; the thief hasn't been found (PenBay Pilot, Oct. 30).
  • Oct. 27: turkeys were stolen from a Thomaston farm overnight. The owner called it one of "too many recently" (PenBay Pilot, Oct. 27).

Polky says break-ins usually pick up in November, at camps and buildings left empty for the winter. Worth knowing if you have one.

Meth sits right next to fentanyl. In Maine's latest overdose report (January through August 2026), fentanyl was a cause in 55% of confirmed overdose deaths. Cocaine was a cause in 49%, and meth in 27%. Two-thirds of the meth deaths also involved fentanyl. In our four counties, 389 nonfatal overdoses were reported in those eight months: Knox 101, Lincoln 102, Sagadahoc 77, Waldo 109. Knox, Sagadahoc and Waldo each had 5 suspected or confirmed overdose deaths, and Lincoln had fewer than 5 (Maine Drug Data Hub, August 2026 report). This week's list had meth in two cases and fentanyl in one.

This edition: how cases ended

All 33 charges in the two new court lists (PenBay Pilot's Waldo list for cases closed Oct. 21-27, plus the one publicly readable entry from Midcoast Villager's Knox list for Oct. 23-30), excluding OUI and traffic. Note: 8 of the 33, all jail sentences, repeat cases that Waldo lists had already reported earlier this year. They're flagged below.

Drugs (12) - Dismissed: 3 - Jail: 7 (5 of them repeat listings) - Fine only: 2

Violence and domestic violence (5) - Dismissed: 3 - Jail: 1 - Fine only: 1

Theft and property (3) - Dismissed: 3

Release and probation violations (7) - Dismissed: 3 - Jail: 1 (repeat listing) - Fine only: 3

Sexual offenses (1) - Dismissed after deferral: 1

Other (5) (resisting arrest, falsifying evidence, firearm, prison contraband) - Dismissed: 2 - Jail: 3 (2 of them repeat listings)

Total: 33. 14 dismissed, 1 dismissed after deferral, 12 jail, 6 fine only.

Not one of the 14 dismissals came with a reason.

Recent roundup: the past two weeks

All six court lists published Oct. 16 to Nov. 2 (Week 1's four plus this week's two): 108 charges, excluding OUI and traffic.

  • Violence/DV (20): 7 dismissed, 1 after deferral, 5 jail, 5 fine only, 2 other
  • Drugs (23): 8 dismissed, 11 jail, 4 fine only
  • Theft/property (10): 6 dismissed, 1 after deferral, 3 jail
  • Release/probation (27): 5 dismissed, 12 jail, 9 fine only, 1 other
  • Sexual (4): 1 dismissed, 1 after deferral, 2 other
  • Other (24): 8 dismissed, 8 jail, 7 fine only, 1 other
  • All (108): 35 dismissed, 3 after deferral, 39 jail, 25 fine only, 6 other

The cases, by category

Prior records come from earlier 2026 court lists in PenBay Pilot, Lincoln County News and Midcoast Villager, matched on name, age and town (names not published), plus a news search. "Not found in public sources" means not found, not "none."

Drug cases

Waldo · 64, Orrington - Charges: meth possession, possession of a scheduled drug, two counts of violating release (Winterport, April 14) - Outcome: all four dismissed, no reason given - Prior record: not found in public sources - Source: PenBay Pilot, Oct. 31

Waldo · 38, Belfast - Charge: possession of a scheduled drug (Stockton Springs, April 4) - Outcome: dismissed, no reason given - Prior record: 2 prior charges, 2 convictions (drug possession and a release violation from a Jan. 2025 offense, $400 and $250 fines) (PenBay Pilot, Feb. 2) - Source: PenBay Pilot, Oct. 31

Waldo · 40, Belmont (repeat listing) - Charges: two counts of fentanyl powder possession, cocaine possession (Swanville and Belfast, April 6), trafficking in prison contraband (Belfast, April 6) - Outcome: 200 days in jail on each, plus $400 on each fentanyl count - Prior record: on Sept. 4, PenBay Pilot listed these same four charges as closed with nine months in jail each. That list also showed 16 other closed charges, 15 ending in convictions, including drug possession, theft, and probation and bail violations (PenBay Pilot, Sept. 4). Neither list explains why the same charges came back with a shorter sentence. - Source: PenBay Pilot, Oct. 31

Waldo · 34, Hope (partly a repeat listing) - Charges: meth possession and possession of a scheduled drug (Brooks, May 4, 2025); falsifying physical evidence (Belfast, Sept. 26) - Outcome: six months in jail and $400 on each drug count; six months on the falsifying charge - Prior record: the same two drug charges, with the same date and sentence, were listed as closed on May 30 (2 charges, 2 convictions) (PenBay Pilot, May 30). The falsifying charge is new. - Source: PenBay Pilot, Oct. 31

Waldo · 42, Belfast - Charge: possession of a scheduled drug (Morrill, July 24, 2025) - Outcome: 364 days with all but 60 suspended, one year of probation, $400 - Prior record: 1 prior charge, 0 convictions. A meth possession charge with the same town and a July 24 offense date was dismissed in February (PenBay Pilot, Feb. 28). - Source: PenBay Pilot, Oct. 31

Waldo · 28, Jackson - Charge: possession of a scheduled drug (Stockton Springs, Aug. 17) - Outcome: 24 hours in jail, $400 - Prior record: 1 prior charge, 1 conviction (drug possession, two days in jail and $400, closed in June) (PenBay Pilot, June 27) - Source: PenBay Pilot, Oct. 31

Also closed (fines only, priors not found in public sources): a 38-year-old from Augusta, drug possession and violating release (Montville, Aug. 22), $400 on each; a 38-year-old from Clinton, drug possession (Burnham, June 11), $400 (PenBay Pilot, Oct. 31).

The call: a 64-year-old's meth case, with two bail violations attached, went away entirely, and we don't know why. Meanwhile someone with 15 convictions on earlier lists got jail on fentanyl. That's consistent. What isn't explained is why that sentence shrank from nine months to 200 days between two lists.

Violence and domestic violence

Waldo · 33, Spruce Head - Charges: domestic violence assault, criminal mischief (Lincolnville, Aug. 9) - Outcome: both dismissed, no reason given - Prior record: not found in public sources - Source: PenBay Pilot, Oct. 31

Waldo · 25, Brighton, Mass. - Charge: domestic violence assault (Belfast, Aug. 23) - Outcome: dismissed, no reason given - Prior record: not found in public sources - Source: same

Waldo · 46, Montville - Charges: refusing to submit to arrest with physical force, reckless conduct, refusing to submit (refusing to stop) (Liberty, July 18, 2025) - Outcome: all three dismissed, no reason given - Prior record: not found in public sources - Source: same

Waldo · 41, Swanville - Charge: violating a protection order (Belfast, Oct. 18) - Outcome: 48 hours in jail - Prior record: not found in public sources - Source: same

The call: two domestic violence assaults, dismissed with no stated reason. DV cases often fall apart when a victim won't testify. If that's what happened, it's real and it's hard. But the list doesn't say, so we can't tell a reluctant witness from a dropped ball. Credit where due: the protection-order violation from Oct. 18 was closed within days, with jail time.

Theft and property

Waldo · 54, Belfast: theft (Belfast, Jan. 28), dismissed. Prior record: not found in public sources.

Waldo · 33, Skowhegan: criminal trespass (Stockton Springs, Aug. 25, 2025), dismissed. Prior record: not found in public sources.

(The Spruce Head criminal mischief charge above was also dismissed.)

Source for both: PenBay Pilot, Oct. 31

The call: every theft and property charge closed this week was dismissed. Last week, all three featured theft cases were dismissed too. With break-ins on everyone's mind, that's the number neighbors will notice. I'd want to know whether restitution was paid first.

Deferred disposition

Knox · 51, Thomaston - Charges: assault; sexual abuse of a minor - Outcome: $300 fine on the assault. The sexual abuse of a minor charge was dismissed as "part of a deferred disposition agreed to between the defense and district attorney's office in October 2024." - Prior record: not found in public sources - Source: Midcoast Villager, Knox County Court News, Oct. 31 (subscriber site; this was the first, publicly readable entry. The printed offense date looks like a typo, so I left it out.)

The call: this one at least has a stated reason: the deferral was completed. But a deferral on a charge this serious deserves a sentence of public explanation. What were the conditions, and who checked them? This is exactly the follow-through question I raised in October.

Release violations and a firearm

Waldo · 40, Stockton Springs (repeat listing) - Charges: illegal possession of a firearm (July 21); violating release (Oct. 1) - Outcome: nine months and one day in prison; six months in jail - Prior record: the same two charges and sentences appeared in the Oct. 12 list (PenBay Pilot, Oct. 12). No other prior found in public sources. - Source: PenBay Pilot, Oct. 31

Also closed (priors not found in public sources; other charges in these cases were traffic and are left out): - 38, Burnham: violating release (Unity, May 16), dismissed, no reason given - 30, Jackson: violating release (July 29), $500 fine - 26, Leeds: violating release (Morrill, Sept. 5), $1,000 fine

Year-to-date: how cases ended

2026 charge outcomes, District 6, excluding OUI and traffic

Sources: court roundups published Jan. 1 to Nov. 2, 2026: 110 lists in PenBay Pilot and Lincoln County News through Oct. 29, plus this week's PenBay Pilot Waldo list (Oct. 31) and the single public entry from Midcoast Villager's Knox list (Oct. 31). This week adds 25 charges. The 8 repeat listings are left out so they aren't counted twice.

What changed since last week: violence/DV +5 (522 to 527), drugs +7 (312 to 319), theft/property +3 (443 to 446), release/probation +6 (585 to 591), sexual +1 (56 to 57), other +3 (521 to 524). Total 2,439 to 2,464. Dismissals 641 to 655.

Gaps: Knox closings Oct. 20-30 are missing except for one entry (PenBay Pilot's last Knox list covered Oct. 3-19). Waldo closings Oct. 28-30 aren't published yet. Lincoln's next list is due Thursday. Older gaps: Waldo Aug. 12-18, Knox around March 5-10 and June 2-14, and several Lincoln weeks.

No data available from Sagadahoc.

Violence and domestic violence (527) - Dismissed: 221 - Dropped for a plea to another charge: 40 - Dismissed after deferral: 9 - Jail: 138 - Fine only: 87 - Suspended: 21 - Other, filed or not guilty: 11

Drugs (319) - Dismissed: 98 - Dropped for a plea: 13 - Jail: 103 - Fine only: 63 - Suspended: 38 - Filed or not guilty: 4

Theft and property (446) - Dismissed: 99 - Dropped for a plea: 23 - Dismissed after deferral: 6 - Jail: 123 - Fine only: 153 - Suspended: 29 - Other, filed or not guilty: 13

Release and probation violations (591) - Dismissed: 106 - Dropped for a plea: 23 - Dismissed after deferral: 1 - Jail: 304 - Fine only: 111 - Suspended: 34 - Other or not guilty: 12

Sexual offenses (57) - Dismissed: 24 - Dropped for a plea: 4 - Dismissed after deferral: 4 - Jail: 20 - Fine only: 2 - Other: 3

Other offenses (524) - Dismissed: 107 - Dropped for a plea: 25 - Dismissed after deferral: 13 - Jail: 92 - Fine only: 222 - Suspended: 35 - Other, filed or not guilty: 30

All charges excluding OUI and traffic (2,464) - Dismissed: 655 - Dropped for a plea: 128 - Dismissed after deferral: 33 - Jail: 780 - Fine only: 638 - Suspended: 157 - Other, filed or not guilty: 73

"Suspended" means a fully suspended sentence with no jail time. Only Lincoln's lists separate "dropped for a plea" and "dismissed after deferral"; Knox and Waldo usually just say "dismissed." These counts come from newspaper court lists, not official records, so treat them as close, not final.

What's missing

  • Reasons. All 14 dismissals this week came from Waldo's list, which never gives a reason. If any of them were dismissed because of an illegal search or evidence that wasn't turned over, that's the system working the way it should, and I'd say so. The list just doesn't tell us.
  • Repeat listings. Three Waldo cases (8 charges) showed up again weeks or months after they were first reported, one with a different sentence. Maybe it's an amended judgment, a probation matter or a clerical repeat. The list doesn't say.
  • Knox. PenBay Pilot hasn't published a Knox list since Oct. 21. Midcoast Villager's Oct. 31 Knox list is behind a paywall, and I only used the part anyone can read.
  • Lincoln. No new list since Oct. 29, which Week 1 already covered.
  • Sagadahoc. Still no public weekly court roundup. If you know of one, send it.
  • Official data. Our region's cases aren't in the state's online court records system yet. Judicial Region 6, which includes Lincoln County's courts, moves to electronic filing on Dec. 7 (Maine Judicial Branch). Even then, there's no county-wide list of outcomes. Prior records here come from news court lists, not a State Bureau of Identification check.

Talk to your neighbors

  1. One sentence per dismissal. Would a short public reason ("victim unavailable," "evidence suppressed," "restorative agreement completed") change how you feel about this week's 14?
  2. Break-ins. If your town's store or camp gets hit this winter, what would you want to happen to the person caught: jail, restitution, a restorative process, or some mix?
  3. Deferrals. When a serious charge is dismissed after a deferral, what's the minimum the public should be told?
  4. Meth AND fentanyl. Meth shows up in more than a quarter of Maine's overdose deaths. Are our treatment options built for stimulants, or just opioids?

Try it with someone who sees this differently. Rule #11: you can hold two ideas at once. Second chances matter, and so does follow-through.

Where I stand

I'm not against second chances. Rule #13: always leave room for redemption.

But this week, 14 of the 33 charges ended in dismissal. Fourteen came with no reason at all... two domestic violence assaults, a resisting-arrest case, a theft and a meth case among them.

Maybe every one of those was the right call. I'd genuinely like to know. A restorative outcome nobody can see looks EXACTLY like a case that fell through the cracks.

That's not a knock on anyone's character. It's a question about the system, and our neighbors deserve an answer.

The DA's office is welcome to respond. If it does, I'll publish the response or update this piece.
